Bella Hadid’s pants are falling down but she doesn’t care. In fact, she seems very aware that her bumsters are slouching towards beach sand. Yesterday at Art Basel in Miami, while lying around with Kendall Jenner, Hadid wore a pair of jeans that were so low that they were hanging-on-by-a-thread, quite literally: they were fastened with shoelace. Better yet? The denim unabashedly exposed Hadid’s thong-esque bathing suit.

Hadid wore the look with a bikini top, a black Dior leather tote, and a pair of fresh white Nike Air Force 1s. There was a bit of an early John Galliano look to the model’s outfit, too: Like the designer during his noughties-era, Hadid opted for a silk bandana wrapped around her head.
Hadid trotting around Miami in a hiked-up, very visible bikini bottom hardly came as a surprise to those accustomed to her taste in beachwear. She loves a shocking swimsuit silhouette, including French cut bottoms. In general, those thong straps are quite the signature Y2K fashion stamp—they dotted the runways of Jean Paul Gaultier, Gucci, and Christian Dior. (Fun fact: Sisqo’s “Thong Song,” a chart-topping tune that prompted actual sales of thongs, just celebrated its 20 year anniversary.)
Thong silhouettes have been making a comeback over the past few seasons. Hailey Bieber wore a sky-scraping pink thong for the 2019 Met Gala. During the Spring 2020 men’s collections (yes, men’s!), Heron Preston showed a ready-to-snap string thing. Versace also sent down a thong-da-dong number with sparkly straps that was worn by none other than Hadid herself. Talk about a full, very cheeky circle.
